About the DV Lottery & Travel Ban

The Diversity Visa (DV) Lottery program, administered by the U.S. Department of State, provides a pathway for individuals from countries with historically low rates of immigration to the United States. Each year, the program makes 50,000 immigrant visas available through a random selection process.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Country of Birth: Applicants must be born in a country deemed eligible for that year’s program. Some countries are excluded based on high levels of immigration.
  • Education/Work Experience: Applicants must have at least a high school education or its equivalent, or have two years of work experience in a qualifying occupation within the past five years.
  • No Cost: There is no fee to enter the DV Lottery, though fees may apply if selected for further processing.

2025 Travel Ban: As of June 9, 2025, a U.S. presidential proclamation imposes a full travel ban on nationals of 12 countries and partial restrictions on 7 others. These restrictions may affect DV visa issuance. Always consult official U.S. government resources before making plans.
